Dr. Jürgen Meyer Foundation

Since 2011, the Dr. Jürgen Meyer Foundation has awarded Cologne Business School with the Endowed Chair for International Business Ethics and CSR

The Dr. Jürgen Meyer Foundation endowed chair is particularly committed to the integration of business ethics and sustainability as a core component in the education and training of tomorrow’s managers and future leaders. Dr. Jürgen Meyer firmly believed, that ethics and sustainability need to play a much larger role in the managerial mentality of business leaders. In accordance with that, his core mission was to ensure that the next generation of academics, policy makers and business leaders are offered and education which strongly emphasizes the importance of ethical decision-making.

Hereby, the foundation focuses on scientific research and teaching in the field of business ethics, paying special attention to middle management through endowed professorships and subsidies to institutions for academic projects (especially higher education). It moreover awards scholarships for Master, PhD and post-doctorate positions. The foundation further supports socially relevant education and training projects. Most importantly, it works towards implementing management concepts into corporate life that correspond to the foundation’s purpose.

Since 2016, the Dr. Jürgen Meyer Foundation together with CBS founded the Center of Advanced Sustainable Management (CASM). The center, for instance, supports network and knowledge transfer amongst academics, policymakers, and business professionals. This is invaluable in realizing Dr. Jürgen Meyer’s wish that sustainability and business ethics establish themselves as essential parts of every business decision and curriculum. Therefore, next to its heavy involvement in establishing sustainability within the university education, the chair and CASM also seek to actively exchange ideas and discuss challenges with other stakeholders locally and internationally.

The goal from the very beginning of the cooperation was very clear to the foundation and CBS:  To play a pioneering role in reshaping the German business education landscape through this unique and fruitful partnership.

History of the foundation

In 1998 Dr. Heinz Jürgen Meyer fulfilled a life-long dream with the acquisition of Ernst Marks GmbH Co. KG. After years of being a successful yet, employed manager, the acquisition finally allowed him to independently implement his corporate ideas. The company is based in Mülheim (Ruhr). Under the brand “marks-3zet”, it subsequently became the inventor and world leader in calibrated underlay sheets. Among other products, the company offers self-adhesive underlay foils in different color schemes and was the first in Europe to promote waterless offset printing. Unfortunately, bad health limited Dr. Jürgen Meyer’s time to pursue his ideas and see them implemented. With no successor in place and his deteriorating health, in 2004, he therefore decided to integrate his group of companies into the Dr. Jürgen Meyer Foundation.
